The original Crane was developed at the time by Hans Jacobs at the German Research Institute for Gliding (DFS). Series production was taken over by Karl Schweyer AG from Mannheim. Version 2 of the two-seater was the most widely built glider in Germany between 1935 and 1939. One speaks of several hundred copies.
