The Heinkel 111 is the primary medium bomber used by the Luftwaffe during World War II. The aircraft was designed before the war and featured a glass bow, streamlined, aerodynamic shape and excellent performance. The HE 111 could carry 2.5 tons of bombs and was armed with six 7.92mm machine guns and one 20mm cannon, providing very effective protection against fighter pursuit. This very distinctive machine is particularly associated with the September campaign, the French campaign and the Battle of Britain, in which aircraft of this type were used en masse. Later, the HE 111s took over the duties of bombers still fighting on all German fronts of the war.
